"An engaging documentary about the struggle to create art while nurturing life ... about answering the call to self-expression in the face of biological imperatives and cultural programming ... an enlightening primer on sexism in the art world." - Jeannette Catsoulis, The New York Times
Synopsis
From the producing team, that won an Academy Award for Born Into Brothels, WHO DOES SHE THINK SHE IS? examines some of the most pressing issues of our time: parenting and creativity, partnering and independence, economics and art.
The film follows five women artists as they navigate the challenges of making work outside the elite art world.
"Boll's film reveals that mothers in the arts ... face the very same imbalance in their lives as mothers slogging through 80 hour work weeks to climb the corporate ladder. Artists or not, mothers will be inspired and empowered by Who Does She Think She Is?" - Heather Cabot, The Huffington Post
Includes interviews with experts; Riane Eisler (The Chalice and the Blade), The Guerrilla Girls, Maura Reilly (Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Brooklyn Museum) and Leonard Shlain (The Alphabet vs. The Goddess).

"I am incredibly impressed. I was lost in the lives of the women, their stories, the incredible art produced by each. I am not an artist, but my mother was a painter. I felt her with me when I watched this film. The meta story about women artists, the feminist movement, the act and demands of care giving, the challenges/sacrifices, the simultaneous visibility and invisibility of women artists came off the screen at me. This film clearly has a place in classrooms - I for one want to show it in my intro women's studies course in the spring!" - Amy Rutstein-Riley, PhD, Professor, Leslie University,Brandeis Scholar, Brandeis Women's Study Research Center
